Transition period ends for catalytic convertor processors

The transition period for processors of catalytic converter processors to apply for the appropriate environmental permit that allows them to process hazardous waste comes to an end on 30th May 2016.

keramik-kats2_blaufilter_v01_01_bjb_reduziert_cmykSince the announcement in March 2016 that catalytic converters which contain (or may contain) support mats made of refractory ceramic fibre (RCF) are to be classified as hazardous waste under the code 16 01 21*, sites previously storing or processing catalytic converters under a low risk waste positon have had a three-month grace period in order to apply for the appropriate environmental permit.

Wiser Environment has been working with companies in the catalytic convertor supply chain to help them adapt to these changes. The short timescales for transition and the absence of clear guidance have presented some challenges, as has the lack of awareness of the changes.

From 30th May 2016, companies that process catalytic converters and don’t have the relevant environmental permit will be required to cease operations.
