Achieving certification to international standards for MVV Environment in the UK

Wiser Environment successfully implemented a complex integrated management system for an innovative energy-from-waste facility with combined heat and power.

MVV Environment Devonport Ltd (MED) is an English registered company, and a subsidiary of German company MVV Umwelt GmbH. MVV Umwelt are themselves part of the MVV Energie AG group, one of Germany’s leading energy companies, with a turnover in excess of €4 billion. MVV Umwelt provides sustainable and efficient energy solutions for waste management. MED is currently constructing an energy-from-waste facility with combined heat and power (EfW CHP), in Plymouth. Commissioning of the plant is planned to start in early 2015.

Wiser Environment was engaged as management system consultants for MVV in the UK, and in this capacity, have supported MED to secure certification for the construction phase of the project to four internationally recognised standards for quality (ISO9001:2008), health & safety (OHSAS18001:2007), environment (ISO14001:2004) and energy (ISO50001:2011). The EfW CHP facility will be operational in 2015 and MVV is seeking to ensure that certification for the same standards is achieved by the end of the second quarter of 2015. We have been working with MED to build a bespoke and innovative integrated management system that meets the requirements of the business and its principal stakeholder – the South West Devon Waste Partnership.

Gerran McCrea, Contract Manager and Management System Representative at MED said: “Wiser Environment has played a leading role in implementing our integrated management system for MVV in the UK, and achieving the certifications we have to date. We intend to certify all our plants in the UK by the end of 2015 and are pleased to continue to work with Wiser Environment to achieve this”.

The integrated management system is structured in such a way that it can be expanded and adapted to MVV’s other sites in the UK. Wiser Environment has been working with MVV Environment Devonport since 2011 and started working with MVV Environment Ridham’s team at Ridham Dock in April 2014.
